I have an old legacy app. How do I transfer it to the consolidated app?

  1. Download and open the FarOut (Formerly Guthook) consolidated app: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/id605447532
  2. Choose the “Restore Past Purchases” option in the top left hand corner
  3. It will connect to your App Store account and restore your purchases
This should cause your previously purchased guide sections to have an “Open” button instead of a “Purchase” button.

If the trail sections still show a “Purchase” button, or you get an error, please email us at support@faroutguides.com with the exact wording of any error message. Also, please send us proof of your original app purchase.

I tried to make a purchase but it says I am not allowed to.

You probably have restrictions enabled on your device. To fix this, do the following:

     1. Settings App
     2. Screen Time
     3. Content & Privacy Restrictions
     4. iTunes & App Store Purchases
     5. In-App Purchases

If you still have trouble making the purchase, please email us at support@faroutguides.com and attach a screen shot of the error message that you see when trying to purchase the trail section. You can take a screenshot by pressing on the power button and the front button at the same time.

I purchased a guide in the past, do I have to pay for updates?

All of the purchases in our apps are lifetime purchases, so if you make the purchase now, you will get all future updates to the app and to the trail info for free, without any extra action on your part.

I just replaced my Android with an iPhone but cannot access my purchases.

We process your purchases through Apple’s App Store and through Google’s Play Store. Since these stores do not communicate with each other, you won’t see your purchases on the opposite platform. Not to worry, though! Contact us via email at support@faroutguides.com and we will provide you with instructions to restore your purchases.

I downloaded the app but only see a demo, section how do I buy a guide?

  1. Go to the tab bar menu at the bottom of the screen and tap on the trails tab.
  2. Tap Choose a Trail. This should show a list of trail sections with a “Purchase” button next to them.
  3. Tap the purchase button and complete the steps.

If you want to see sections for a different trail, tap the back button in the top left corner and find the trail you need from the main list.

You can also make in-app purchases directly from the App Store. Simply search for the trail you want, and look for the in-app purchase that corresponds to our app.

How do I load my maps?

  1. Navigate to the main map page and tap the Store tab at the bottom of the screen on the tab bar.
  2. Tap Choose a Guide. This should show a list of guide sections. Those you have purchased will show a ‘Download’ or ‘Open’ button next to them.

If you want to see sections for a different guide, tap the back button in the top left corner and find the guide you need from the main list.

Account Help

I can't log into my account.

You must login using your username and not your email address. Characters are case-sensitive, so please double-check that you have entered your username and password correctly.

If you still can’t get into your account with your username spelled correctly, or if you can’t remember your username, press the “Forgot Password” button on the Log In page. Enter your email address here, and you will receive an email with a password reset link (remember to check your Spam folder!). The subject line of the email will include your username, so if the problem is that you entered your username incorrectly, you can skip the password reset link and go straight back to logging into your account with the correct username.

If you enter your email address in the Forgot Password step, but the app tells you there is no account associated with that email address, it’s likely you never created an account in the app. The account you used to make your in-app purchase is your Apple ID, which has nothing to do with the account that you create within our app. The account you create in our app is used to manage content that you create in the app, such as waypoint comments, custom routes, and recorded tracks. So if you get the message saying that your email address doesn’t have an account associated with it, press the Sign Up button at the bottom of the Log In page, and you can create a new account.

If none of these options work, please contact us via email at support@faroutguides.com.

I am trying to sign up and the app says my email is already taken.

If the app is telling you that your email address is already taken, it’s likely that you already set up an account and are trying to log in from the “Sign Up” page rather than the “Log In” page. Please go into the Menu, then Account and choose “Sign In/Create Account”. This will bring you to the Log In page. Enter your username here (it is case sensitive!) and password (also case sensitive) and hit the Log In button. Do not press the Sign Up button, as this will bring you to the page for creating a new account.

If you’ve forgotten your password, you can press the “Forgot Password?” button below Log In, and an email will be sent to you with a link to change the password. Make sure to check your spam folders for the reset email.

Background Maps

I don't see any background maps

To download background maps for offline viewing:

  1. Navigate to the main map page and tap the Trails tab at the bottom of the screen on the tab bar.
  2. Tap File Manager.
  3. Select the desired background map or maps and toggle a download.

You can remove your downloaded maps at any time by repeating these steps.

My is my map so fuzzy when I zoom in?

In order to keep the offline map download size reasonable, we cap the resolution of the offline maps. You can get high-resolution road and satellite maps by turning off the offline maps, although the online maps are only available when you have an internet connection.

You can use the higher resolution online map set while you have wifi or cell service by following these steps:

  1. Navigate to the main map page and tap the “Guide” tab at the bottom of the screen on the tab bar.
  2. Tap “More” on the tab bar and then tap “Settings.”
  3. Tap Offline maps (under Map Settings)
  4. Select No offline maps.

You can switch back to offline maps at any time by repeating these steps and choosing your offline map.

The satellite image is sharp for a second then becomes fuzzy.

You have your online background map set to satellite and your offline map set is also set to satellite maps. Since the online satellite maps are much higher resolution, you may quickly see a high-resolution satellite map before the lower-resolution offline satellite map loads. In order to adjust your online and offline settings, follow the steps below:

  1. Navigate to the main map page and tap the “Guide” tab at the bottom of the screen on the tab bar.
  2. Tap the”More” tab and then tap “Settings”
  3. Tap Offline maps (under Map Settings)
  4. Select No offline maps.

If you selected “No offline maps” and would like to change the style of online map:

  1. Tap out of Offline Maps
  2. Tap Online Map
  3. Choose the type of map

FarOut Update

Is there a deadline to update the App or can I continue using Guthook?

If you are using an individual-trail legacy app, the deadline to switch to FarOut is Jan 1, 2022. If you choose not to update your Guthook Guides App, we are unable to provide bug fixes and updates. Updating to the FarOut App (by updating your Guthook App) will be the only way to access your purchases and App functionality moving forward.

If I purchase a guide on my computer, will it show in my mobile App? If it does not, what do I do?

Yes, a purchase made on any platform will be accessible on any other platform. If it is not, contacts us at  and provide your username & time of purchase.

Can I run both the legacy Apps and the FarOut App at the same time?

All legacy apps will be removed at the start of 2022 – this includes all individual Android guides, Bikepacking, and Cyclewayz. You will need to update your FarOut app to access your purchases and all future updates.

Will it cause issues if I run the FarOut mobile App and the Web App in a browser on my phone?

Do I have to download the new FarOut App or will my Guthook App continue working?

The FarOut App is the same as the Guthook App, it is just an update. Updating your app will not change any functionality, but will allow you access the newest features ( such as quick filters & comment voting). Moving forward, you will not receive the most up-to-date functionality unless you update your app.

Other iOS FAQs

Why do Android and iOS apps look so different?

Our iOS and Android apps do differ slightly in their appearance. However, the majority of their features remain the same, and they access the same trail guide data.

The GPS distance from me is wrong.

If you are on the trail: When you have the GPS turned on, distances to waypoints show up as either “x miles ahead” or “x miles behind” based upon the trail distance (as opposed to direct-line or “as the crow flies” distance).

If you are not on the trail: When you have the GPS turned on, distances to waypoints show up as “x miles from you”. Because you are not on the trail, this is a direct-line or “as the crow flies” distance away from your current location.

If you are trying to plan your hiking distance from one point to another while you’re not on trail, the “Draw New Route” option in the main menu is the best way to find the exact distance, and it comes with the added benefit of taking into account all the distance of side trails that you might need to go down.

Loading and Purchasing Maps

I have an old, individual legacy app. How do I transfer to the consolidated app?

  1. Do NOT delete the old, individual legacy app from your phone before following these directions.
    1. Confirm that you have a FarOut account in your old app and that you are logged in. If you do not, please create an account.
    2. Download the new FarOut (Formerly Guthook) consolidated app from the Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.atlasguides.guthook
    3. Log into your account in the consolidated FarOut (Formerly Guthook) app.
    4. Your purchased trails should be marked as available to open.

If the app still says you need to purchase the trail, please email us at support@faroutguides.com with your FarOut username and the email that you use for Google Play purchases through the Google Play Store.

How do I make an in-app purchase

  1. Open the Menu in the upper left side of the screen
  2. Select “Change trail”
  3. Scroll through options, search for a trail, or apply filters to find a trail. You may also select the “map” icon in the upper right corner to see trails on a map

  5. Once your payment method is set through the Google Play Store, select Buy and your purchase will immediately be downloadable and ready to use.

If I pay now, do I have to pay for future updates?

All of the purchases in our apps are lifetime purchases, so if you make the purchase now, you will get all future updates to the app and to the trail info for free, without any extra action on your part.

I just replaced my iPhone with an Android, how do I access my purchases?

We process your purchases through Google’s Play Store and through Apple’s App Store. Since these stores do not communicate with each other, you won’t see your purchases on the opposite platform. That being said, if you had a FarOut (Formerly Guthook) account on your original phone, you should be able to log into that on your new phone and access your purchases. If that does not work, please contact us via email at support@faroutguides.com and we will provide you with instructions to restore your purchases.

How do I switch sections in my app?

  1. Open the Menu (three bars in the upper left of the screen)
  2. Select “Change trail”
  3. If you see the trail that you would like to open in the list, select that row and the trail will open on the map. If you’d like to change sections, select the full trail and then “View Sections” to make your selection

How do I enable GPS?

The Android app uses the most efficient method to obtain your current location using “Location Services.” If you have mobile service or a Wi-Fi connection, the app will likely use those resources to determine your location. If you are in airplane mode or do not have any internet connection, the app will use the device’s built-in GPS to determine your location. If your device does not have a built-in GPS (many tablets do not have it), the app will not provide location information when you are in airplane mode or do not have an internet connection.

You may toggle Location Services on and off from the app by pressing the round button in the bottom right corner of the Map or Elevation view. We recommend turning Location Services off when you are not using the app to save battery life.

If you do not the option to turn Location Services on and off within the app, there are a few reasons why:

A. Your Location Services are not enabled. Open your device’s settings (not the app settings) and search for Location services. Wording varies depending upon your device model and version of Android, but there will be a toggle at the top to turn Location on and off for the entire device. Make sure that Location is toggled on.

–or–

B. You did not select “Allow” when you installed the app and it asked you if the app could use your location. In that case, try this:

1. Open your device settings (not the app’s settings)

2. Search for App Permissions. Depending on your device model and version of Android you will be able to choose a list of your installed applications or choose a list of the type of permissions.

If it is a list of installed applications, find our app app in the list and select it, then find the Location permission and switch it on.

If it is a list of permissions, find the Location permission and select it, then find our app in the list and switch the permission on.

How do I restore previous purchases to my phone?

  1. Confirm that you are using the latest version of the FarOut (Formerly Guthook) app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.atlasguides.guthook
  2. Open the Menu (three bars in the upper left of the screen)
  3. Select “My user profile”
  4. Confirm you are logged in, if you are not: log in or create an account

If the app still says you need to purchase the trail, please email us at support@faroutguides.com with your FarOut (Formerly Guthook) username and the email that you use for Google Play purchases and we’d be happy to restore your purchases for you!

Other Android Questions

Why does the Android and iOS app look so different?

Our iOS and Android apps do differ slightly in their appearance. However, the majority of their features remain the same, and they access the same trail guide data.

I have an account on my phone, but I am unable to log in on my computer.

First, please select the “Account” tab in your mobile app and confirm that you are logged into an account. If you are not, please create one and then use that to log in on your computer.

If you are logged in on your phone, please check things like spaces, case sensitivity, and special characters, as these are users most common issues.

If you are still having trouble, please shoot us an email at support@faroutguides.com.

If I log into the Web App, does this count as one of my two devices I’m allowed to log into simultaneously?

No, this device limit only applies to mobile devices.

I do not see the elevation profile on my computer.

The elevation profile is not currently available on desktop computers, but is available in the FarOut App. We are working on adding the elevation profile to the Web App as soon as possible.

If I purchase a guide on my computer, will it show in my mobile App? If it does not, what do I do?

Yes, a purchase made on any platform will be accessible on any other platform. If it is not, contacts us at  and provide your username & time of purchase.

Will it cause issues if I run the FarOut mobile App and the Web App in a browser on my phone?

There's a campsite here, but it's not listed in your app!

In addition to helping long-distance hikers, we are advocates of Leave No Trace principles. Our goal is to help conservation and maintenance organizations by only listing legal campsites. Some guides, such as the Tahoe Rim Trail and Colorado Trail guides, list official campgrounds plus point out no-camping areas and assume that you can camp anywhere else using Leave No Trace principles.  If you see an illegal campsite listed in our app, please let us know by emailing us at support@faroutguides.com.

You can fit way more tents at this campsite!

As hikers fit more tents into a campsite, the area may grow, but this can cause harm to the environment in the area, so we encourage hikers to avoid enlarging existing campsites.

I don't see any waypoint photos. How can I see pictures of waypoints?

Since images take up extra space on your phone, we provide them as an optional download rather than an automatic one. (A few of our apps, such as the Ice Age Trail and Pacific Northwest Trail, do not currently have waypoint photos.)  To download photos, follow the instructions below.

FOR IOS DEVICES:
  1. Navigate to the main screen and tap the menu button in the bottom right corner.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Manage downloads
  4. Tap the download button next to Waypoint Photos. This may take some time, but will still continue to download if you navigate away from the screen.

You can remove your downloaded photos at any time by completing these same steps.

FOR THE ANDROID FarOut (Formerly Guthook) V8.0+ APPS:
  1. Navigate to the main map screen (with a trail loaded).
  2. Tap the menu button in the top left corner.
  3. Tap Download manager
  4. Tap Waypoint photos. This may take some time depending on the number of photos.

You can remove your downloaded photos at any time by completing these same steps and tapping the trash icon next to “Waypoint photos.”

FOR ANDROID LEGACY APPS:
  1. Navigate to the main map screen (with a trail loaded).
  2. Tap the circular menu button in the bottom left corner.
  3. Tap Maps & Photos.
  4. Tap Manage Photos.
  5. Tap Start Download. This may take some time depending on the number of photos.

You can remove your downloaded photos at any time by completing these same steps.

How much space will this guide take up on my phone?

The file size for our guides can be as small as 200KB or as large as 8MB, depending on the length of the trail and which offline maps and photos you choose to download.

What is the social feature?

The Social Check-in feature allows you to post updates and follow other hikers. Your friends and family can use it to stay updated on your hike, even if they don’t own a trail guide.

How do I send a Check-in?

To send a check-in from iOS or Android:

(Check-ins will only send to your followers when your phone is connected to WiFi or has cell service. Your phone cannot be in airplane mode to send a check-in. Check-ins are stored on your phone until you are in cell phone reception/WiFi range and can not be used to contact Emergency Services.)

  1. Navigate to the map screen and tap the tools button (top right for iOS, bottom right for Android).
  2. Choose the “Send a Check-in” (iOS) or “Create a location check-in” (Android) option.
  3. Add a message (optional).
  4. Tap Send.
  5. Your followers will receive your Check-in whenever your phone has cell service or is connected to WiFi.

If I follow someone but don't buy the guide, what can I see?

If you’re following a hiker and choose not to purchase the full trail guide for their trail, you will be able to see any location and check-in that they share, no matter where it is, but you will only be able to see the line of the trail and the waypoints for the demo section or any sections you have purchased.

What if I don't want anyone to see my location?

We respect your privacy, so all of our social features are completely optional. You do not need to share your location with anyone if you don’t want to. Simply set your user profile to private, and no other people will be able to find you in a search.

Why can't my friends see me when they search my username?

In order to be searchable, accounts must be set to public. You can do this by visiting the settings page of your profile. Tap the public profile toggle. It will turn teal when it is on, meaning your profile is public and can be seen by other hikers.

Can I use this in an emergency situation?

Our check-in feature is NOT SENT until you are in cell phone reception/WiFi range and CANNOT be used to contact Emergency Services.

Does the Check-in feature work offline?

CHECK-INS WILL ONLY SEND TO YOUR FOLLOWERS WHEN YOUR PHONE IS CONNECTED TO WIFI OR HAS CELL SERVICE. YOUR PHONE CANNOT BE IN AIRPLANE MODE TO SEND A CHECK-IN. CHECK-INS ARE STORED ON YOUR PHONE UNTIL YOU ARE IN CELL PHONE RECEPTION/WIFI RANGE AND CAN NOT BE USED TO CONTACT EMERGENCY SERVICES.
