Whitney is above tree line and partially domed shaped. It is famous for its jagged ridges extending on both sides. As a result of the alpine climate and ecology very few plants grow near the summit.
The Mount Whitney Trail, starting at the Whitney Portal, is the most popular route to the summit, and travels for 10.4 miles (16.7 km). The elevation gain to the summit is over 6,000 feet (1,820 m). It lies on the boundary of Sequoia National Park and Inyo National Forest.
The Mt. Whitney summit also marks the southern terminus of the John Muir Trail (JMT). As a result most northbound JMT hikers follow the Mt. Whitney Trail down to Whitney Portal. From the summit you can see the Owens Valley to the east. There are also numerous high Sierra Nevada peaks nearby making the view from the summit spectacular.
Hikers come from all over the world to experience this permitted summit hike. The trail provides spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding area. Hikers should be aware of the effects that a hike can have on those not accustomed to the high altitude.
