The Great Himalaya Trail (GHT) is a network of trails forming one of the toughest and highest continuous walking paths in the world. Stretching from Pakistan to Bhutan, the GHT promotes sustainable tourism in remote mountain regions, ensuring that the benefits of trekking reach those who live at the top of the world.

This guide covers the 855-mile/1375-km Nepal Trek portion of the GHT plus an additional 715 miles/1150 km of trails. This trek is designed to be the highest possible route across the Nepali Himalaya without the need for mountaineering equipment. This allows for a classic thru-hike with light equipment and relatively simple logistics.

The Nepal Trek connects the classic treks you’ve heard of: Annapurna, Manaslu, Kanchenjunga, and Langtang. Then adds little-visited remote regions like Upper Dolpo and the Far West to form a continuous route across Nepal. It typically takes 3-5 months to complete the entire trail given the significant elevation changes.

This guide includes several alternate and side trails, including the popular Three Passes Loop in the Everest region (passing Everest Base Camp), Makalu Valley, and many worthwhile side quests.

About Our Partner

The Great Himalaya Trail is a multi-country trekking route across the Himalaya, managed by an impact-driven organization rather than a commercial one. The GHT documents trails and develops new routes, producing GPX files and print and digital maps used by trekkers, tour operators, and the government of Nepal. It also trains teahouse owners to run Check-In Points along the route, supports a small group of vetted local operators without taking commissions from them, and measures the environmental and social impacts of trekking on remote mountain communities.
