What is FarOut?
FarOut is a navigation app that shows your live location on a detailed map, even with zero cell service. Hikers, bikers, paddlers, and rafters use it on trails and rivers all over the world.
FarOut started out in 2012 as a backpacking guide to the Pacific Crest Trail, and has grown to include hundreds of detailed hiking, biking, rafting, and paddling guides around the world.
Is FarOut a website or an app?
Both! Use the FarOut app on your phone when you’re out on the trail. When you’re planning at home, you can use the FarOut website on your computer or tablet. It has the same maps and guides, just on a bigger screen. Sign in with the same account and everything will be there.
Do I need cell service to use the app?
Only once, to download your trail guide before you go. After that, everything works fully offline.
What’s a “guide”?
A guide is a detailed map for one trail/river. It shows you where you are, your elevation, and helpful spots along the way like water, campsites, trail junctions, and more. You’ll also see real-time comments from other hikers and paddlers. FarOut has hundreds of guides for hiking, biking, paddling, and rafting all over the world. See the whole list HERE.
Do I need an account to make a purchase?
Yes, and it’s what connects everything. Any guide you buy is tied to your account, so it shows up on every device you sign into, whether it’s your phone, tablet, or computer.
How do I get started?
1. Download the free FarOut app from the App Store (for iPhone) or Google Play Store (for Android).
2. Find the guide you want and purchase it in the app or on our Web App.
3. Download your guide, maps, and waypoint photos for offline use while you still have cell service or wifi.
That’s it. You’re ready to hit the trail!

Trusted Trail Data
All of the data for our routes is collected by trusted individuals and partner organizations, and is kept meticulously up-to-date. The track of each trail includes side trails and alternate routes, along with key waypoints. Our apps also offer comprehensive town guides, helping you resupply and access other services quickly.
Offline Use
Once you’ve completed the initial setup of the app, all of our trail guides work offline. They use your device’s internal GPS to display your current location and guide you along the route. Offline use includes access to all features of the guide, including the map, elevation profile, waypoint list, and more.
Detailed Waypoints
Waypoints are plotted on the map and elevation profile, and each includes its own detail page with photos and descriptions. Water waypoints offer the most up-to-date water information, gathered from trusted sources and checked by other users.
Built for Community
Stay informed about conditions ahead by reading other users’ waypoint comments, and let other users know about your experience by leaving your own comments. Keep your friends and family up to date by sharing a Check-in with your current location and a personalized message.
