So, what does this new feature do?

For hikers:

As a hiker, you have “followers” who see your “check-ins” on the map. A check-in includes your location, time the check-in was created, and an optional message. You can either invite friends and family to follow you, or other Guthook users can request to follow you. Hikers can also connect with fellow hikers and see where all their friends are at a glance of the map.

For family and friends of hikers:

As a family member, trail-family member, or friend of a hiker, you get notified on your phone when your hiker has a new check-in, which you then view in the Guthook app. You can view the most recent check-in, the entire history of check-ins, or a custom date range of check-ins. You are not required to purchase a guide to use this feature.

But what about my privacy?!

You have complete control over all aspects of the check-in feature:

  • Stay invisible: either do not set up an account in the Guthook app, or leave your account set to private. All new users’ accounts are set to private by default.
  • Stay invisible, but still have followers: you can send invitations to friends and family to follow you without setting your account to public. Your followers can also keep their accounts set to private.
  • Set your account to public, and stay in control: If you set your account to public, other users can search for you and request to follow you. Once you receive a request you can either accept it, reject it, or block the requester so that the requester can never search for you again.
  • Change your mind, for hikers: As a hiker, you can remove a follower from your list of followers, block a follower, or even mute your messages to any follower without removing them from your list.
  • Change your mind, for followers: As a follower, you can remove anyone from the list of hikers that you are following, mute check-in notifications, or block other hikers from inviting you to follow them.
