Australia and New Zealand are both fabulous places to hike and bike. Many visitors wishing to escape the Northern Hemisphere winter love to visit the stunning countryside in the Southern Hemisphere’s Summer and Autumn seasons – November thru May. It is pleasing to note for your travel plans that Australia is relatively mild in the Winter with little snow, and so many rides and hikes are doable year-round.
Best Time to Cycle and Hike
The best time to cycle and hike in Australia depends on where you plan to go. Perfect in the Summer (December – February) are the southern states: Tasmania, Victoria, South Australia, Australian Capital Territory, Coastal South Australia, and coastal New South Wales. Be careful, however, of February, which is known for very hot and humid conditions.
Winter (June – August) in Australia is best for the north and central areas. Northern Territory and the famous Larapinta Trail are a prime example where the season is quite short, May thru September, and can be surprisingly cold overnight, often with negative temperatures. Queensland, Central NSW, Central Australia and East Timor are also best in Winter as there are less monsoonal rains and it is cooler.
Weather in New Zealand is different than Australia as there are harsh snowy winters when many trails are closed. Spring can cause avalanches on some trails so check that out. Summer and Autumn are the best times to tramp and bike in New Zealand.
Spring and Fall are great everywhere!
Carry Water
Water in Australia can be scarce no matter the time of the year. Check waypoint comments and carry water if needed. Snakes are more active in the hotter months.
Check the Weather Forecast
Of course, local weather must be checked. The emergency and weather apps available in every state will keep you up-to-date regarding floods, fires, and any other weather you might encounter.
