How to Prepare for Your First Thru-Hike

In 2017, I embarked on my first Thru-hike, taking on the Pacific Crest Trail. Having grown up and lived in Mexico City, thru-hiking was an unfamiliar concept to me, as it was not a sport practiced in Mexico at that time. Nevertheless, being a high-performance athlete, I had contemplated conquering this challenge from Mexico to Canada—an endeavor that wouldn’t be easy due to the vastly different climates compared to those in Mexico.

Drawing upon my knowledge and skills as a high-performance athlete developed over six years in Mexico, I gradually underwent physical and mental training, forming the foundation for my triumph on that trail and the fulfillment of my goal.

Encountering snow for the first time, and with 2017 being a heavy snow year on the PCT, I navigated one of the snowiest regions at the time—the Sierra Nevada in California. Crossing it proved to be one of the most challenging and exhilarating experiences of that year. It was also the moment when I decided that I wanted to become the first person from Mexico to achieve the Triple Crown of Hiking (Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, and Continental Divide Trail).

I achieved this challenge on September 17, 2019, as I became the first person from Mexico to complete the Triple Crown of Hiking.

Throughout my pursuit of this challenge, I recognized the significance of preparing oneself physically, mentally, and emotionally for such endeavors. Proper planning, equipped with accurate information, appropriate gear, and effective training, fosters knowledge that empowers us to address challenges autonomously and confidently.

Since 2020, I have devoted myself to training others in adventure challenges. Sharing insights on achieving self-sufficiency in mountainous terrain is a crucial aspect of my courses. Technology, such as FarOut, serves as a tool for accessing essential data in our planning. It’s important to remember that the mountains are unpredictable, and each of us bears the responsibility of being adequately prepared, as overlooking this can have life-threatening consequences.
