The Past and Future of Battery Banks
We looked at how the 10,000 mAh battery bank technology has changed in the last eight years. In 2013 battery banks were bulky, heavy, and only provided a rough estimate of the charge level. By 2018 battery banks were less bulky, lighter, and provided a better estimate of the charge level.
Now in 2021 battery banks are more compact, lighter, and provide a precise number that displays the charge level. If the battery weight and volume trend continues a typical 10K mAh battery bank in 2025 will be about 30% lighter and take up less than 50% of the volume as a 2013 battery.
10,000 mAh Battery Banks
The 10,400 mAh RAVPower battery bank purchased in 2013 weighed 323 grams (11.4 ounces) and is shown on the left.
The 10,050 mAh Anker battery bank purchased in 2018 weighed 191 grams (6.7 ounces) and is shown in the middle.
The 10,000 mAh T-CORE battery bank purchased in 2021 weighed 174 grams (6.1 ounces) and is shown on the right.
All these battery banks were purchased for around $30 each.
Battery Bank Weight Drops Every Year
With battery bank technology improving, the weight of a 10K mAh battery bank drops every year. We found that a typical $30 10K mAh battery bank dropped about 6 grams a year.
If this trend continues, we expect a typical 10K mAh battery bank will weigh about 150 grams (5.3 ounces) in 2025. This is about 33% lighter than a 2013 external battery.
Battery Banks Get More Compact Every Year
With battery bank technology improving, the size of a 10K mAh battery bank drops every year. We found that a typical $30 10K mAh battery bank dropped in volume about 7 cubic centimeters (0.4 cubic inches) a year.
If this trend continues we expect a typical 10K mAh battery bank will have a volume of about 72 cubic centimeters (4.4 cubic inches) in 2025. This is less than half of the volume of a 2013 external battery.
