About Our Partner

AdventureKEEN is an independent nature and outdoor activity publisher. It was founded more than 40 years ago, guided then and now by a love of being in the woods and on the water, by a passion for reading and books, and by the sense of wonder and discovery made possible by spending time recreating outdoors in beautiful places.
It is AdventureKEEN’s mission to share that wonder and fun with its readers, and most especially with those who haven’t yet experienced all the physical and mental health benefits that nature and outdoor activity can bring.
In addition, AdventureKEEN strives to teach about recreating responsibly, so that the natural resources and habitats we all cherish and rely on will be available for future generations. AdventureKEEN’s imprints include Wilderness Press, Menasha Ridge Press, Adventure Publications, Clerisy Press, and the Unofficial Guides.

About the Authors

Rachel Cooper is a freelance writer and has been the Washington, D.C., expert for About.com (now TripSavvy.com) since 2004. The website provides a wide range of information and gives her personal insight about attractions, events, jobs, transportation, real estate, sports, and more. Rachel is also the author of the book Images of Rail: Union Station in Washington, DC, and has written for local and regional publications. She especially enjoys outdoor recreation, including hiking, biking, skiing, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding. She met her husband, Brian, through a local windsurfing club, and they have spent more than 25 years together seeking new adventures as they travel across the region and around the world.

Renee Marchese Sklarew is a native Washingtonian who enjoys exploring her city’s many attractions, including its parks and trails. Renee developed her love for hiking during a temporary move to Zurich, Switzerland, in grade school. On weekends, her family hiked different mountains, and she continued that tradition by traveling to national parks with her husband and two daughters. Renee has published travel articles and photos in newspapers and magazines, including The Boston Globe and The Washington Post. She coauthored The Unofficial Guide to Washington, D.C., and Fodor’s Travel Washington, D.C., guidebook. She serves as dining editor for VivaTysons Magazine. Renee loves discovering new trails and is thankful to Brian and Rachel for their joyful collaboration and shared passion for hiking and nature.
